Write about nothing, said my daughter…who often replies to my thin air enquiries because she knows I'm impatient and that thin air is very slow in answering.
Nope…can’t do “nothing”, I already did that, I reply (now to my daughter as well as thin air)
True…but don’t you always write about nothing? She wondered innocently.
True, I replied, not at all offended because it’s actually true. But I usually do "nothing"...with a twist.
Hmm. She looked pensive for a moment. She’s really cute when she’s pensive. Okay. How about we go to the mall and maybe you’ll find the "twist" there?
I look pensive for a moment. (more lines between my eyebrows when I’m pensive. Less cute) Yes, you’re right. I’m pretty sure the twist is there. I’ve often found the twist at the mall (also, while we’re there we can get one of those super expensive frosty drinks at Starbucks. It will cost more than the lunch we will be buying just before that). She only looks pensive for about 1 second this time (it’s still cute).
Yes! I’m in!!! Let me go ask my identical twin sister to see if she agrees. I don’t bother looking pensive about this. The lines between my eyebrows stay away for the moment. I know telling the sister is merely a formality. We are totes going to the mall.
So! It’s not only Friday, but it’s summer break!
I’m sorry, I mean...
IT’S SUMMER BREAK!!
My daughter is still sitting here and insisting on full-caps. She wanted me to do a big whoopdeedoop font and even add some emoji, but I want to keep it professional. We met halfway with the caps lock (it’s the least I can do, considering how hard the girls have worked this whole year and studied this whole week). Plus, I already gave her "totes" (translation: totally) (not "more than one tote bag" )
So, yaaay! They are officially done! Summer can officially begin!
Here are all of the activities we are planning.
Camping. Swimming. Hiking. Biking.
Anything for heart-rates spiking.
Sleeping, eating, rest, retreating...
anything for stress receding.
I probably don’t have to point out that my daughter is still looking over my shoulder and has pretty much taken over creative control here. Make it rhyme! (she demanded) Fine, fine.
So I have a lot to do. I have limited time in which to come up with excuses for getting out of the first section of the poem and reasons for extending the second section. It's going to take some time. Because of that, my blog posts may become shorter and more sporadic this summer.
Maybe not? I'm not sure what the muse has planned...last I heard, she was on a Yacht in the Bahamas somewhere. Do you need me back there? I remember her asking. At the time I was actually offended - as if she thinks I can't even write without being graced by her presence!! (whatever). Although, after way too many thin air conversations, I realize she's more useful than she looks (as per recent Snapchat she sent...wearing a wildly coloured Hawaiian mu mu and holding a giant fish-bowl sized fruity drink in her hand).
Either way, I thought I'd take a minute to remind everyone...please take some time off this summer! If at all possible? Do something in FULL CAPS!!! Or just put your feet up. Maybe get to know the people who wander around in your house. Maybe do the odd summery type of thing (you can use my list?)
YOLO!!! (presently being informed by my daughter that this is not actually the name of an ice-cream despite how ice-cream like it sounds. I have to Google it, I still think I'm right. Apparently it is an acronym meaning "you only live once")
But be careful out there. YODO!!! (you only die once) (somehow this one never caught on...)
Have a happy and safe summer!
ROLO. That's the ice-cream. Let's all go eat Rolo ice-cream now, who's with me?
